ROSCO
Mayor of Milford since the turn of the century, Rosco is an adventurous kiwi bloke who’s passionate about the area, often outspoken, and never politically correct. He loves nothing more than showing visitors to Milford Sound the raw beauty of the place he calls home.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN…
Rosco was on some days off with friends back in 1988 kayaking down the Hollyford River into Lake McKerrow and out to Martins Bay, with the plan of paddling along the coast on the Tasman Sea and into Milford Sound. After waiting for 2 days at Martins Bay for the 4-metre swell to ease, it was an easy paddle down the coast and into Milford. The final 16km saw Rosco and his friends paddling all the way into the sound escorted by a pod of 30 bottlenose dolphins. This memorable trip planted the seed for setting up Milford’s first commercial sea kayaking operation.
THE REST IS HISTORY…
Today, over three decades later, Rosco has the longest serving owner-operated sea kayaking business in New Zealand. With this wealth of experience and a small team of top class guides working alongside him, Rosco continues to offer visitors to Milford Sound new and exciting sea kayaking adventures.
ROSCO’S OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS…
- First to skydive into Milford back in 2003.
- First to paraglide off Mt Phillips, overlooking Deep Water Basin, back in 2004.
- Six-time winner of the infamous Homer to Home (1998-2003). This cycling race descended from the Homer Tunnel down a series of hairpins, dropping 700 metres in a little over 10km. Speeds were reached over 80kph on a course that included 3 one-way bridges, with the road remaining open to normal traffic. Rosco stood undefeated when the race was discontinued in 2004 due to safety concerns.
- Race director and organizer of the Homer Nude Tunnel Run. This event runs on April 1st annually. Rosco was ecstatic that the event made the world’s top 10 best naked outdoors events in August 2012.
- Race director of the Milford Pentathalon. This event runs annually at the end of November and is extremely popular with Milford locals.
